Proud to Cheer on our Local OlympiansFebruary 19, 2010
Local skiers Patrick Deneen of Cle Elum, Holly Brooks of Seattle, Yina Moe-Lange of Sammamish, and Roberto Carcelén of Leschi, all of whom have strong ties to The Summit, are set to compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Twenty-two-year-old Deneen, a medal favorite, is a member of the U.S. Olympic ski team who grew up skiing at The Summit, including many years training on the steeps of Summit Central’s Triple 60 face. Patrick is set to compete in moguls on February 14th, Patrick earned a gold medal in the same event during the 2009 Worlds.
Twenty-seven-year-old Brooks, a self confessed “late bloomer” in cross-country ski racing, is a recent Olympic qualifier for the U.S. ski team. Holly is a true child of The Summit having spent much of her youth learning to cross-country ski, instructing, and training for races at the mountain’s nordic center. Her family also has strong ties to The Summit’s Nordic Center and it was her parents who introduced Holly to the sport and helped her grow in all aspects of cross-country skiing and racing. Holly’s first race will be on February 15th.
Sixteen-year-old Moe-Lange, a member of the Danish Olympic ski team, has been training with Team Alpental Snoqualmie (TAS) at The Summit since 2005. A promising young ski racer, Yina tops the American junior rankings in giant slalom for her age group. She will compete in giant slalom on February 24th and slalom on February 26th.
Thirty-nine-year-old Carcelén, Peru’s only Winter Olympian going to Vancouver, currently trains at The Summit’s Nordic Center. Roberto’s story embodies the Olympic spirit and is evidence that anything is possible if you really want it! Roberto had to qualify to compete in the Olympics, as mandated by FIS. He did so by competing in races around the globe but recently officially qualified at Silver Star, B.C. Watch for Roberto in the 15-kilometer freestyle event.
Good luck Patrick, Holly, Yina, and Roberto!
